A State-of-the-art review on the seismic response and design of tunnels is presented. Emphasis is placed on recorded responses of actual tunnels during past earthquakes. Relevant recent experimental and numerical studies are discussed. The paper presents a state-of-the-art review of the current understanding of the seismic behaviour of tunnels.
The tunnel structure robustness to earthquake disaster is based on realistic fragility curves. The resilience loss can be described through the seismic resilience curve which is a quantitative description of the seismic performance of tunnels according to the damage of shield tunnels.
With the rapid urban development of transportation, shield tunnels are inevitably built in the earthquake zones of cities, which have to face increased uncertain environmental risks of earthquakes (Zhao et al., 2015). Therefore, it is necessary to examine the seismic resilience of shield tunnels.
Sun and Dias (2019) pointed out that tunnel construction would cause significant disturbance to the initial stress state of the surrounding soils. This implies that during a given earthquake, the seismic behavior of tunnels is probably modified.
