As a result, a high tendency for integrating onboard energy storage systems in trains is being observed worldwide. This article provides a detailed review of onboard railway systems with energy storage devices. In-service trains as well as relevant prototypes are presented, and their characteristics are analyzed.
Energy storage systems help reduce railway energy consumption by utilising regenerative energy generatedfrom braking trains. With various energy storage technologies available, analysing their features is essential for finding the best applications.
The longer the charging and discharging time of an energy storage system, the more it tends to be a capacity-based energy storage system; conversely, the shorter the charging time of an energy storage system, the more it tends to be a power-based energy storage system.
