Of the 309 PV station clusters (hereafter, PV parks), the top 7% largest ones account for 61% of the total area of PV power stations, indicating that PV power stations in the Northwest tend to be developed in the form of large-scale centralized PV parks.
Energy storage can provide a multitude of benefits to California, including supporting the integration of greater amounts of renewable energy into the electric grid, deferring the need for new fossil-fueled power plants and transmission and distribution infrastructure, and reducing dependence on fossil fuel generation to meet peak loads.
This method also can be further applied to other regional studies, because many large PV power stations around the world are being established at a similar scale and landscapes (i.e., sparsely populated areas with open and flat land, such as the Sahara desert (Nordrum, 2019) or the grasslands of Australia (Owano and Xplore, 2017).
By 2019, the area of PV power stations has increased to 722.0 km 2, nearly tripled compared to 2013. The increase in area was mainly from Ningxia, Inner Mongolia, and Xinjiang.
