Flow batteries have a competitive advantage in terms of cycle life, providing a longer duration of 1000 cycles compared to Lithium-ion batteries, which only offer 500 cycles.
Additional electrolyte is stored externally, generally in tanks, and is usually pumped through the cell (or cells) of the reactor. The reaction is reversible allowing the battery to be charged, discharged and recharged. In contrast to conventional batteries, flow batteries store energy in the electrolyte solutions.
Flow batteries are already a reality. Fort Carson, a US military base, has contracted Lockheed Martin to build a 10 MWh redox flow battery to store its solar farm's energy. Unlike other new battery technologies that are still in development, flow batteries are already being implemented.
Recent research and development in flow batteries is summarised. The importance of fluid flow and mass transfer is highlighted. Studies in small cells with poorly defined flow conditions are considered critically. Modelling approaches are discussed, stressing the need for experimental validation.
