Mainland China accounts for most of the global energy storage demand, driven in the near term by regional requirements for new utility-scale wind and solar projects to include energy storage capacity. However, the Chinese market is entering an era of change.
As a key enabler of China’s new power system, new energy storage has achieved remarkable progress — reaching over 100 GW of installed capacity by September 2025 — and has become essential for renewable integration and energy security.
Recently, multiple new energy storage projects across China have reached important milestones. In Shandong, Xinjiang, Hebei, Qinghai, and Inner Mongolia, several 100-MW-level projects have either started construction or successfully connected to the grid.
